**AI visibility tracking** measures how often and in which context a brand or domain appears in answers from AI systems, either as a name in the text or as a linked source. The search term "AI monitoring" is also used for the technical monitoring of AI systems. This entry covers visibility measurement.

## How does AI visibility tracking work?

A fixed set of prompts is sent to AI systems at regular intervals and the answers are evaluated. According to vendors, typical metrics are:

- **Mentions:** the number of answers in which the brand appears
- **Citations:** linked pages from the brand's own domain
- **Share of voice:** the brand's share of mentions compared with competitors
- **Visibility index and sentiment:** reported by SISTRIX

Which systems are covered depends on the vendor. SISTRIX lists Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Ahrefs runs tracking daily, weekly or monthly. SISTRIX reports a daily visibility index (as of October 2026).

## How does it differ from rank tracking and AI observability?

Rank tracking records positions in search results. AI visibility tracking records mentions and source links in generated answers, which have no fixed position list. AI observability, the other meaning of "AI monitoring", watches AI applications that a company runs itself, for instance latency, token use and errors.

Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the Web search type of the Performance report in Search Console. Since August 31, 2026, the Generative AI performance report there also shows how often links to a site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, as impressions by page, country, date and device, without queries. Which questions lead to a mention and how competitors do shows up only in a separate measurement.

## Example

For the prompt "Which SEO crawler suits websites with several million URLs?" a team records every week which brands appear in the answer and which URLs are shown as sources. Over several weeks the data shows whether the own brand appears more or less often.
