**AI visibility** describes how often and in what way a brand, product or website appears in answers from AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews. The term has no fixed definition. It usually covers two things: whether the brand is named in an answer, and whether the brand's own site is linked as a source.

## How is AI visibility measured?

AI answers have no stable ranking positions. Measurement therefore works with a fixed set of prompts that are sent to one or more AI systems at regular intervals. According to reports from the industry, common metrics are:

- **Mentions:** in how many answers the brand is named.
- **Citations:** how often an answer links to the brand's own site.
- **Share of voice:** the brand's share of mentions compared with competitors for the same prompts.
- **Sentiment and context:** whether the brand is recommended, listed neutrally or described critically.
- **Cited sources:** which third-party pages the AI systems rely on for the topic.

In practice, the same prompt can produce different answers on different days or for different users (assessment). Numbers become meaningful only across many prompts and repeated runs. A single screenshot says little.

Google is the one provider with first-party data. Since 2026, Search Console includes a Generative AI performance report that shows how often links to a site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country and device. It reports impressions, without queries or clicks. ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants offer no comparable reporting to site owners, which is why prompt-based tracking tools exist.

## What are the technical prerequisites?

For Google's AI features, Google names no requirements beyond regular search. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.

Other providers depend on their own crawlers. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and states that sites blocking it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot to surface and link websites. A page these bots cannot fetch, or cannot read, is not available as a source. Robots.txt rules, firewall and CDN settings, and server errors all play into AI visibility.

## Example

Suppose an online running shoe retailer sends 50 prompts per month, such as "Which running shoe suits a beginner with overpronation?", to three AI assistants. The shop is named in 14 of 50 answers and linked in 6 of them. A competitor appears in 22. The evaluation also shows which review sites and forums the assistants cite, giving the team a list of places where the brand is missing.

## FAQ

**How can I check my AI visibility?**
Define prompts your customers would actually ask, run them in the AI systems that matter to you, and record mentions and citations over time. For Google, add the Generative AI performance report in Search Console.

**What is a good AI visibility score?**
There is no shared scale. Scores differ by tool and prompt set. Comparing against competitors on the same prompts is more useful than an absolute number.

**Is AI visibility the same as GEO?**
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of improving presence in AI answers. AI visibility is the outcome that this work is measured by.
