**Bot management** means detecting automated requests to a website, classifying them and deciding what happens next. Depending on the bot, a request is allowed, limited, challenged or blocked.

## What does it involve?

Vendors such as Vercel describe four common methods: signature-based detection of known bots, rate limiting, JavaScript challenges and behavioral analysis. Verified bots, for example Googlebot, are usually let through. Some platforms add rule sets for AI bots that can log or deny requests from crawlers collecting training data or fetching pages for answers. Akamai describes graded responses from monitoring to blocking.

## Why does SEO care?

An overly strict rule can lock out search engines or SEO tools. Because a user agent can be faked, Google describes two checks. One is a reverse DNS lookup followed by a forward lookup, where the domain must be `googlebot.com`, `google.com` or `googleusercontent.com`. The other is matching the IP address against Google's published IP range files. For AI bots, allowing or blocking is a business decision that affects visibility in AI answers.

## Example

A rate limit blocks a crawler. In the access log, requests from that user agent return 403 or 429. The example is invented.

## Common questions

**How can you tell if a visitor is a bot?** The user agent alone is unreliable. Systems combine signatures, IP verification, request behavior and challenges.

*Diagram: CDN: edge in front of the origin server.* Google allows higher crawl rates for sites backed by a CDN. On the first request for a URL the cache is still empty, so the origin server delivers it. The order inside the edge server is simplified and differs between providers.
