A **CMS** (content management system) is software for creating, editing, managing and publishing digital content, usually website content, without programming knowledge. In SEO, the term nearly always refers to the system behind a website, such as WordPress, Drupal or Shopify.

## What does a CMS do?

Wikipedia describes typical functions as content editing, revision control, indexing and search, permissions and templates for presentation. Many systems add plugins, multiple languages and approval workflows.

By architecture, a traditional (coupled) CMS combines authoring, storage and presentation in one application. A decoupled CMS separates authoring from presentation but keeps a publishing environment. A headless CMS has no presentation layer and delivers content through an API to a separate frontend.

## Which systems are common?

W3Techs reports as of October 2026 that WordPress runs on 40.1 percent of all websites, which is 58.6 percent among sites with a known CMS. Shopify holds 7.8 percent and Wix 6.1 percent of that group. 31.6 percent of websites use no CMS that W3Techs detects.

## What does a CMS have to do with SEO?

The CMS determines how URLs, titles, canonical tags, redirects and sitemaps are created and how freely they can be changed (assessment). Before a CMS migration, the question is whether these settings stay controllable in the new system.

## Example

An editor creates a page and saves it. The CMS generates the HTML, assigns a URL and, if the system supports it, adds an entry to the XML sitemap.
