**Content freshness** describes how current a piece of content is relative to a search query. In SEO it refers to how recency affects which pages Google shows. It is not a universal bonus for newer pages.

## How does Google treat freshness?

Google says it runs various "query deserves freshness" systems designed to show fresher content for queries where it would be expected. Its examples are a recently released movie, where current reviews fit better than production articles, and a recent earthquake, where news replaces older preparedness pages. For queries without a time dimension, a newer date probably matters less (assessment).

Dates should be accurate. Google recommends a visible date labeled "Posted" or "Last updated", plus `datePublished` and `dateModified` in structured data, and the two must match. Google says its systems look at several factors to estimate when a page was published or significantly updated. Future dates and event dates should not be used as the publication date. Changing the date without substantial changes to the content is listed as a warning sign in Google's helpful-content guidance.

In an XML sitemap, Google uses `lastmod` only if it is consistently and verifiably accurate. It should reflect the last significant change, such as to main content, structured data or links, and not a copyright-year edit.

## Example

```xml
<url>
  <loc>https://www.example.com/guides/vehicle-tax/</loc>
  <lastmod>2026-09-14</lastmod>
</url>
```

The date changes only when figures, deadlines or statements in the article changed.

## Common mistakes

- Updating the visible date every month without editing the content
- Different dates in the page text and in structured data
- Setting `lastmod` to the deployment date for every URL
