# Content refresh

**Content refresh** means revising an existing page so that it matches current facts and the current search intent again. The URL normally stays the same. A common trigger is a drop in clicks and rankings, often called content decay.

## What does a refresh include?

A typical workflow has a few steps. First, pages with declining performance are picked, usually from Search Console data. Then the current results for the target query are checked for topics the page lacks and for a change in intent. After that, outdated statements are corrected, gaps are filled and sections that no longer apply are removed. Small triggers call for a quick update, while a changed topic may call for a full rewrite. Pages with no demand are better merged or removed than refreshed.

## What about dates?

Google's documentation says the visible date and the structured data (`datePublished`, `dateModified`) should match, and that its systems estimate when a page was published or significantly updated. Changing the date without a substantial edit therefore gives readers and search engines a wrong signal.

## Example

A comparison of newsletter tools dates from 2023. In the refresh, prices and features are rechecked, two discontinued tools are removed, a newly searched-for tool is added, and the modified date and markup are updated.

## FAQ

**Can I use Google's "Refresh Outdated Content" tool for this?**
No. The tool in Search Console is meant for pages you do not own that have already changed or been removed.
