# Dark traffic

**Dark traffic** means visits whose origin an analytics tool cannot determine. Most of them appear in the Direct channel, even though the visitors did not type the address. The term comes from analytics practice and does not appear in Google's documentation.

## Where does dark traffic come from?

In GA4, a session lands in Direct when the source is `(direct)` and the medium is `(not set)` or `(none)`. That happens when no referring page is passed on. Portent lists, among other causes, links from apps and text messages, private browsing sessions, some social platforms, bots and redirects from HTTP to HTTPS (2019).

A link shared in a private chat is a typical case, because the click carries no referrer. Direct therefore holds two groups that standard reports cannot separate: visitors who type a URL or use a bookmark, and visits without a known origin.

## A second meaning

Exposure Ninja uses the term more broadly, for demand that is created but cannot be attributed, including mentions in AI answers without a link. Wiktionary defines it as traffic that analytics software miscategorizes because it lacks data such as the origin of the user. Some sources also use "dark traffic" for bot visits. This entry follows the analytics meaning.

## Example

A colleague sends an article link through a messenger. The visit shows up in GA4 as `(direct) / (none)`, although it came from a recommendation. (Invented example.)
