**E-commerce SEO** is search engine optimization for online stores. It covers category and product pages, URL structure, structured data and the product data a store shares with Google. Stores typically have many near-identical pages and changing stock (assessment), which makes the work different from optimizing an editorial site.

## What does e-commerce SEO include?

Google publishes a dedicated guide for e-commerce sites. It covers where shopping content can appear on Google, how to share product data, structured data, launching a new store, high-quality product reviews, URL design, site architecture, and pagination and incremental loading.

Typical work areas:

- **Page types.** Category pages and product detail pages serve different search intents and need their own structure.
- **URLs.** Google advises against internally linking to temporary parameters such as session IDs and tracking codes, and accepts either a path segment or a query parameter for variants, with the URL without the parameter as the canonical.
- **Structured data.** Product markup describes name, price, currency and availability, and Google recommends identifiers such as GTIN and MPN where they exist.
- **Product data feeds.** Google's documentation says that providing both structured data on the page and a Merchant Center feed maximizes eligibility for shopping features.
- **Filters and facets.** Every filter combination can create a new URL. Without control this leads to duplicate content and crawl waste.

## Example

A shoe store has `/shoes/` as a category, `/shoes/trail-alpine/` as a product page and `/shoes/trail-alpine?color=green` as a variant. The variant points to the base URL with a canonical tag. The product page carries Product markup and appears in the Merchant Center feed with the same price and availability.

## Common mistakes

- **Linking internally to temporary parameters.** Google advises against internal links to session IDs or tracking codes. They create short-lived or duplicate URLs.
- **Variants without their own URL.** Google recommends that each variant, such as color or size, be reachable through its own URL.
- **Using fragments for content.** Google does not use fragment identifiers (`#black`, `#white`) in indexing, so such variants count as the same page.
- **Many URLs with the same content.** Google advises minimizing the number of alternative URLs that return the same content, because they cause unnecessary crawl requests.
