**Engagement rate** in Google Analytics 4 is the percentage of sessions that were engaged. Social networks use a metric of the same name that each platform defines in its own way. This entry covers the web analytics metric.

## When is a session engaged?

According to Google's help page, an engaged session meets at least one of these conditions.

- It lasts longer than 10 seconds.
- It has a key event.
- It has two or more page or screen views.

## Formula and bounce rate

```
Engagement rate = engaged sessions / all sessions × 100
```

Bounce rate is the percentage of sessions that were not engaged. The two values add up to 100 percent. GA4 introduced this pair in place of the Universal Analytics bounce rate, which counted single-page sessions.

## Using it in SEO

Compare the engagement rate of landing pages that receive organic traffic. A low value on a page with many organic sessions can indicate that the content does not match the search intent. That reading is an interpretation, not a rule. For short answers like a phone number or opening hours, low values are normal because the visitor reaches the goal at once.

You can find the metric in GA4 under Reports, Engagement, Pages and screens, where it can be added to the table for a per-page view.

## Example

A landing page has 2,000 organic sessions in a month, and 1,300 of them are engaged. The engagement rate is 65 percent and the bounce rate is 35 percent. After a form is moved higher on the page, more sessions contain a key event and the rate increases.

## FAQ

**How is engagement rate calculated in GA4?**
Divide engaged sessions by all sessions and multiply by 100.

**Is engagement rate the same as on Instagram?**
No. Social platforms define their own engagement rate from likes, comments and similar interactions. The two numbers measure different things.
