**Evergreen content** is content that stays relevant over a long period, so people keep searching for and reading it. The name comes from evergreen trees. The opposite is content with a short life span, such as news or seasonal pieces. The term comes from content marketing, and Google does not define it.

## What counts as evergreen content?

Typical formats are how-to guides, definitions, glossaries, checklists and explainers. "How to change a tire" and "What is a mortgage?" are questions that are asked year after year, and the answers change rarely.

Two groups are worth separating. Some pages stay valid without edits. Others cover a topic that is always in demand but depends on tools, rules or numbers that change, such as a Google Search Console guide. They need regular updates to stay accurate.

An evergreen page can keep attracting visitors and links for years. That is an assessment based on practice, not a promise of rankings.

## Dates and maintenance

Google says it estimates a page's date from several factors and recommends accurate dates, no future dates and matching visible and structured values. Changing a date without substantive changes is listed as a warning sign in Google's helpful-content guidance. For evergreen pages this means the "last updated" date should move only when the content actually changed.

## Example

A glossary entry defining "canonical tag" can remain valid for years. An article titled "SEO trends 2024" loses its value within a year and is not evergreen.
