The **helpful content update** was a Google ranking system announced in August 2022 to show more original, helpful content written by people, for people. It is a historical term. Google says the system became part of its core ranking systems in March 2024.

## What was the helpful content update?

Google announced it on August 18, 2022 (the date is also given by Root and Beta). The system was designed to reduce the visibility of content that seems to offer little value to visitors. According to Google's announcement, it affected English-language searches globally to begin with and introduced a site-wide signal. Google's status dashboard lists the rollout starting August 25, 2022, and later helpful content updates starting December 5, 2022 and September 14, 2023. Google's guidance asked creators whether content shows first-hand experience and whether readers leave with what they came for.

Google describes the system as folded into the core systems in March 2024, alongside the March 2024 core update. Since then, there is no single signal for helpfulness. Google's ranking-systems guide lists the helpful content system among retired systems.

Because it is no longer a separate update, ranking drops cannot be attributed to "the helpful content update" today. Core updates and spam updates are announced under their own names.
