**Impressions** in SEO are the number of times a link to your website was shown in Google Search results. The figure appears in the Search Console performance report and, together with clicks, forms the basis of the click-through rate. The word has other meanings in advertising and on social networks, covered at the end.

## What counts as an impression?

Google defines an impression as a user having seen, or potentially seen, a link to your site in Search, Discover, or News. The link must appear on the results page as loaded, without the user having to click "see more". Inside a carousel or an expandable section, the item has to scroll into view. If a user scrolls away and comes back during the same search, Google still counts one impression.

A person does not have to look at the result for it to count. An impression says the result was displayed, nothing more.

## How Google assigns impressions

- Impressions, clicks and position data of all variants of a page are assigned to the canonical URL Google selects.
- Clicking a link inside the results that starts a new search does not count towards your site.
- For images, Google records one impression per host page URL, even when several images from that page appear.
- If two results from your site appear for one query, the chart total counts a single impression.

When you review impressions by URL, you are therefore reading the numbers of the canonical version.

## Example

A guide appears in the results 12,000 times in a month and receives 240 clicks. Search Console reports 12,000 impressions and 240 clicks, so the click-through rate is 2 percent. If impressions fall while clicks stay the same, the page is shown for fewer or less popular queries.

## Impressions in advertising and social media

Google Ads counts an impression each time an ad is shown on a search results page or elsewhere on the Google Network. Social platforms use their own definitions. Numbers from these systems cannot be added to or compared with Search Console impressions.

## FAQ

**What is a search impression?**
It is one display of a link to your site in Google's results, as recorded in Search Console.

**Are impressions the same as pageviews?**
No. An impression happens in the results, before anyone visits. A pageview is recorded in your analytics tool after the page loads.

## Search Console and GA4 compared

| Aspect | Google Search Console | Google Analytics 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility in Search | Impression: a link to the site was seen (or potentially seen) in Search, Discover or News | no own data; once linked, GA4 shows Search Console metrics in dedicated reports |
| Visit from Search | Click: for most result types, any click that sends the user to a page outside Google Search, Discover or News | records the visit on the site (session, events); clicks from Google Search only through the Search Console link |
| Session | no such metric | Session: starts with a page or screen view when no session is active and times out after 30 minutes of inactivity by default |
| Page views | no such metric | Views: number of web pages or app screens users saw, repeated views included |
| Data source | Google's data on how the site appears in Google Search | events sent by the Google tag (JavaScript) on the site; visits without JavaScript enabled are missing |
| Delay | data usually available in 2–3 days; the newest data can be preliminary | processing can take 24–48 hours; Search Console data appears in GA4 48 hours after collection |
| Privacy | anonymized queries: very rare queries are omitted from the table but included in chart totals | data thresholds: rows with demographic data or search query information may be withheld when there are too few users; not adjustable |
| Completeness | data truncation: only the most important rows are stored and shown, the table shows up to 1,000 rows; the most complete list comes from the bulk data export | sampling: if a query exceeds the event quota (10 million events for standard properties), a subset is used and scaled up |
