# Lemmatization

**Lemmatization** is a natural language processing technique that reduces inflected word forms to their dictionary form, the lemma. "Running" becomes "run," and "better" becomes "good." In SEO, it matters because search systems and content analysis tools use it to group word variants that mean the same thing.

## How is lemmatization different from stemming?

Stemming cuts words down with rules, usually by stripping suffixes. The textbook *Introduction to Information Retrieval* calls it a crude heuristic. Lemmatization uses a vocabulary and a morphological analysis of each word, so it returns real dictionary forms and can handle irregular words. It often needs the part of speech. The textbook's example is "saw": a stemmer might return "s," while a lemmatizer returns "see" for the verb and "saw" for the noun.

The same source reports that these normalization methods do little for English retrieval in aggregate. For languages with richer morphology, such as German, Spanish, or Finnish, evaluations showed clear gains.

## What does lemmatization mean for SEO?

Google's ranking systems guide describes systems such as BERT, RankBrain, and neural matching that relate words to concepts and can return pages that don't contain every word of a query. Google does not say whether lemmatization is part of that. In practice, the technique shows up in keyword tools and content analysis software that cluster variants like "running shoe" and "running shoes" into one topic (assessment).

## Example

| Word form | Lemma | Possible stem |
|---|---|---|
| studies | study | studi |
| better | good | better |
| was | be | wa |

The stem column is simplified. Results depend on the stemmer used.
