**Marketplace SEO** is the optimization of product listings for the internal search and rankings of a marketplace such as Amazon or eBay. It is a separate discipline from optimizing for Google, even though the names sound alike.

## How is marketplace SEO different from Google SEO?

Shoppers on a marketplace search with buying intent, and the marketplace ranks products inside its own catalog. Amazon does not publish a ranking formula. Its seller guidance names five search components: queries typed into the search box, search filters, the search results page, sales rank and sponsored ads. SISTRIX adds that purchase probability weighs heavily, for example through conversion rate and sales velocity (assessment by SISTRIX, not confirmed by Amazon).

In practice the levers are the product title, bullet points, description, images, price, reviews and the right category. Amazon recommends putting the primary keyword into the title with brand name, product type and descriptive details, using bullet points for the key facts and adding back-end search terms for synonyms. Links and editorial content play almost no role inside a marketplace.

A marketplace listing does not belong to the seller. The operator sets rules, fees and rankings and can change them. Product data such as GTIN and description can still be shared with the store's own website.

## Example

A brand selling drinking bottles names brand, product type, volume and material in the title ("Brand X stainless steel water bottle 750 ml, insulated") and uses the bullet points for terms buyers search for, such as "leak-proof".

## Common mistakes

- **Keyword stuffing.** Amazon states that keyword stuffing can create a poor customer experience and hurt rankings, and advises writing naturally.
- **Overlong titles.** The Amazon title limit is 200 characters, and Amazon recommends no more than 60.
- **Redundant or irrelevant back-end terms.** Amazon advises avoiding redundant or irrelevant terms in the back-end search terms.

## FAQ
