A **meta description** is an HTML meta tag that summarizes a page's content in one or two sentences. Search engines may show this text below the title in a search result, as part of the snippet. Whether they use it for a given query is up to the search engine.

## How does Google use the meta description?

According to Google, snippets are created primarily from the page content. Google uses the meta description when it describes the page more accurately than text taken from the page itself. The same URL can therefore show your meta description for one query and a passage from the body text for another.

Google does not use the meta description for ranking. In 2009 Google wrote: "Even though we sometimes use the description meta tag for the snippets we show, we still don't use the description meta tag in our ranking." Its value lies in the click decision. A description that matches the query tells searchers whether the page has what they need.

Google sets no length limit for the tag. Snippets are truncated as needed to fit the device width. Many SEO tools recommend roughly 150 to 160 characters so the text is rarely cut off on desktop; this is a rule of thumb, not a Google requirement. To control length yourself, use `max-snippet` in the robots meta tag. `nosnippet` suppresses the text snippet entirely. Since these rules also limit what Google may use as direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, set them deliberately.

## Example

```html
<head>
  <title>Women's Waterproof Hiking Boots | Example Store</title>
  <meta name="description" content="48 waterproof hiking boots for women, sizes 5 to 12. Free returns within 30 days, delivery in 1–2 business days.">
</head>
```

The description lists concrete facts about the page: range, sizes, shipping. Google recommends this kind of specific information, especially for product and article pages.

## Common mistakes

- **The same description on many pages:** Google points out that identical or similar descriptions don't help when individual pages appear in results. On large sites, descriptions can be generated from page data such as product attributes, which Google explicitly encourages.
- **Keyword lists:** A string of search terms gives users no clear idea of the page and, according to Google, is less likely to be shown.
- **Promises the page doesn't keep:** Per Google's documentation, the meta description is used only when it describes the page more accurately than on-page text. A promise the content doesn't back up gives it no such edge.
- **Empty or missing tags after a relaunch:** Template changes can drop the field across thousands of URLs without anyone noticing.

## FAQ

**Why is Google ignoring my meta description?**
Google shows the text that best fits each query. If a passage on the page answers the query more precisely, Google uses that. According to Google, descriptions made of long keyword strings are less likely to be shown as a snippet.

**Do meta descriptions still matter?**
They don't affect rankings at Google, but they shape how a result reads when Google uses them. For pages with many similar competitors in the results, that can decide the click.

**How do I write a good meta description?**
Summarize what the page actually offers, with the details searchers need to decide. Write a separate one for each page, or generate them from structured page data.
