# People-first content

**People-first content** is content written for people with a specific need and judged by how useful it is to them. Google uses the term in its helpful content documentation and contrasts it with content made primarily to attract visits from search engines.

## How does Google frame it?

Google offers self-assessment questions rather than a checklist to tick off. The search-engine-first side includes questions such as "Is the content primarily made to attract visits from search engines?", "Are you using extensive automation to produce content on many different topics?" and "Are you mainly summarizing what others have to say without adding much value?"

On automation, Google says that using AI generation to produce content for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings violates its spam policies. It also asks whether the use of automation is evident to visitors where that matters. Google also recommends adding accurate authorship information where readers would expect it.

Google's ranking systems guide places the helpful content system inside its core ranking systems since March 2024. The documentation does not describe "people-first" as a single measurable ranking factor (assessment).

## Example (fictional)

A page on checking water hardness explains how to read a test strip, gives ranges in °dH and names the author's qualification. The counter-example covers 40 towns with interchangeable paragraphs and no information of its own.
