# Ranking drop

**A ranking drop** is a fall in the position of a page in search results for one or more queries. In SEO, the term usually means Google's organic results. The search results for the phrase also include sports and marketplace rankings.

## What causes a ranking drop?
Google's debugging guide for traffic drops names several causes: algorithm updates, technical problems such as server errors or robots.txt mistakes, security issues such as malware, spam policy violations, seasonality, and site migrations that change URLs. According to reports, stronger competition is another common cause, though it is not on Google's list.

## How do you check it?
The Search Console Performance report shows position and clicks per query and page, and Google suggests comparing periods and filtering by search type, page and country. Page indexing and crawl stats reports help rule out technical causes. Google Trends shows whether demand dropped for the whole topic.

## When should you act?
Google says small movements are normal. After a core update, it advises waiting at least a full week after completion before analyzing. Its examples: a move from position 2 to 4 needs no drastic action, while a fall from 4 to 29 calls for a closer look at content quality. Improvements can take several months to show.

## Example
In an invented example, a guide drops from position 3 to 12 the day after a core update starts, while other pages stay stable. Check the update status page and wait until the rollout is complete before changing content.
