**Related searches** are query suggestions that Google shows on a results page so people can refine or continue their search. Clicking one runs a new search. This entry covers Google's results page.

## Where do they appear?

Google's search result elements gallery groups related searches and related questions under exploration elements, which help people expand a search beyond the first query. Related searches commonly sit at the bottom of the results page. Based on observation, a similar box labeled "People also search for" appears when someone returns from a result to the results page. Related questions, known as People Also Ask, are a separate element made of expandable questions.

Google's help page adds that, for signed-out users, related searches can reflect recent searches, and that this can be switched off in privacy settings.

## How are they chosen?

Google's gallery describes related searches as a cluster of related searches that other people have done, generated automatically from the initial query and other things people have searched for. Google does not publish further details of how it picks them.

## What can SEOs do with them?

Related searches are not links to sites, so a page cannot rank in them directly, as the Semrush Knowledge Base notes. They serve as input:

- to find secondary keywords and phrasing used by searchers,
- to see which angles of a topic searchers explore next,
- to check intent behind a head term.

SiteGuru adds a caution: not every suggestion fits your site, so validate with search volume and the actual results.

## Example

A search for "canonical tag" shows related searches at the bottom of the page. Terms that fit an existing section can enrich that page, and terms that point to a new question can become a new page or an FAQ entry.

## FAQ

**Are related searches the same as People Also Ask?**
No. Related searches are suggested queries, and People Also Ask shows questions that expand with an answer.

**Can I turn related searches off?**
Google's help page describes one setting: signed-out users can stop related searches that reflect their recent searches by turning off search customization in their privacy settings.
