An **SEO strategy** is the plan that defines how a website will improve its visibility in search. It sets goals, topics, priorities and responsibilities. A single tactic, such as rewriting title tags, is one measure within a strategy.

## Components of an SEO strategy

Google gives no template for this. The following structure is common in industry guides (assessment).

1. **Goals.** What SEO should contribute, such as leads, sales or brand reach.
2. **Starting point.** Technical state, existing content, current rankings and competitors.
3. **Topics and search terms.** What the audience searches for and which intent is behind it. Google's guide advises thinking about what users might search for and about the variations of those terms.
4. **Actions.** Content, technical fixes, internal linking and, where used, link building.
5. **Priorities.** Effort and expected benefit per action, and who implements it.
6. **Measurement.** The metrics that show progress.

Semrush frames the same ground as six decisions on visibility, audience, topics, positioning, presence and measurement. Search Engine Journal lists twelve steps that include an audit, keyword research and competitive analysis. The labels differ, the contents overlap.

## Timing and measurement

Google writes that changes can take effect after a few hours or only after several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging results. A strategy should therefore schedule review points. Search Console reports impressions, clicks, CTR and average position.

## Example

An insurer wants more inquiries for liability insurance. Its strategy names ten priority queries, the pages to create or revise, the technical issues to fix first and the metrics reviewed each month.

## FAQ

**How long does SEO take?**
Google says changes can show within hours or take several months.

**What are examples of SEO strategies?**
Content-led approaches built around topic clusters, technical clean-up of a large site, and local visibility for businesses with physical locations are typical examples (assessment).
