**SERP volatility** describes how much the results on search engine results pages change over a period of time. It can refer to one keyword or to a whole index, and tools usually express it as a score.

## What causes SERP volatility?
Google makes core updates several times a year and smaller unannounced updates continuously. Google says core updates are broad and do not target specific sites. Pages that lose positions are not necessarily bad, because other pages may now fit better. Other causes named by secondary sources are seasonal demand, changing meaning of queries, and competitors publishing or changing content.

## How is it measured?
Tools such as Semrush Sensor, MozCast, or Accuranker compare rankings of a fixed set of keywords over time and report a score. According to reports, most providers use proprietary formulas, so values from different tools are not comparable. One secondary source found only a single provider, Accuranker, that publishes its calculation method.

## How should you read it?
High volatility across the index points to an update or test, while a change that affects only your pages points to something on the site (assessment). Google recommends waiting at least a week after a core update ends before judging changes in Search Console.

## Example
Your rank tracker shows many keywords moving by several positions on the same day, and the volatility tools show a spike. Check whether an update was announced before changing pages.
