# Session IDs in URLs

A **session ID in a URL** is an identifier that links requests to one visitor session and is appended to the address, for example `?sid=a1b2c3`. The usual alternative is a cookie. Google's URL structure documentation says to avoid session IDs in URLs wherever possible and to consider cookies instead.

## Why is it a problem?
For SEO, every visit can produce a new URL for the same page. A crawler then sees many addresses with identical content, which wastes crawling on duplicates.

For security, OWASP states that an ID in the URL might be disclosed through web links and logs, browser history and bookmarks, the Referer header or search engines. It can also make session fixation and ID manipulation easier.

## Example
```
https://example.com/cart?sid=a1b2c3
https://example.com/cart?sid=d4e5f6
```
Both URLs show the same cart page, but a crawler treats them as two pages.

## What helps?
Moving the session identifier into a cookie (with the Secure, HttpOnly and SameSite attributes, as security guidance suggests) removes it from the address. Where that is not possible right away, a canonical tag pointing to the URL without the parameter reduces the duplicate problem.
