**Transactional intent** describes a search in which the person wants to complete an action, most often a purchase, a booking, or a sign-up. Keywords with this intent are transactional keywords.

## Where does the term come from?
Andrei Broder grouped web searches in 2002 into navigational, informational and transactional queries. SEO practice still uses this split. Google's rater guidelines work with different labels, and the "Do" category comes closest, though it also covers actions without a purchase (assessment).

## How do you recognize transactional keywords?
Typical signals are modifiers such as buy, order, purchase, book, discount or cheap, often combined with a product name. Rank Math adds that searchers with this intent are ready to buy but have not decided where. The search results usually show product and category pages and shops instead of guides.

Many SEO sources add a fourth class, commercial investigation, for people who compare options before buying. Some sources fold it into transactional intent.

## What does this mean for content?
A page for a transactional query should let the visitor complete the action. A product or category page usually fits better than a how-to article. Competition is often high because large retailers rank for these terms.

## Example
“buy coffee machine” aims at acquiring a product, and “download coffee software” at fetching a file. “best coffee machine” points to a comparison before buying, and “how to descale a coffee machine” to information. The table compares transactional intent with the other types. The queries are freely chosen examples.

## Keyword types and search intents compared

| Type | Characteristic | Example | Category in Google's rater guidelines | Origin of the label |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short tail | short, broad term at the head of the demand curve; intent is often unclear | “coffee machine” | – | counterpart to the long tail; no clear first source |
| Mid tail | between the head and the long end of the curve; more specific than short tail, broader than long tail | “coffee machine with grinder” | – | no clear first source |
| Long tail | specific, rarely searched query, usually several words long | “coffee machine with grinder under 300 euros” | – | term from Chris Anderson, “The Long Tail”, Wired, October 2004 |
| Informational | find information on a topic | “how to descale a coffee machine” | Know, special case Know Simple | Broder 2002, “A taxonomy of web search” |
| Navigational | reach a specific website or page | “reddit login” | Website | Broder 2002, “A taxonomy of web search” |
| Transactional | perform an activity on the web, such as buying or downloading | “buy coffee machine” | Do | Broder 2002, “A taxonomy of web search” |
| Commercial investigation | consider a purchase and compare first | “best coffee machine” | no category of its own | industry usage; neither in Broder nor in the rater guidelines |
| Visit-in-person | go to a nearby place, such as a shop | “gas stations” | Visit-in-Person | Search Quality Rater Guidelines, section 12.7.4 |
