A **vanity URL** is a short, memorable web address that leads to a longer or more technical destination URL. It is typically used for campaigns, print, social profiles and talks. The term comes from marketing and does not appear in Google's documentation.

## How does a vanity URL work?

The vanity URL is usually only an entry point. A visitor opens `example.com/webinar`, and the server redirects to the actual page, such as `example.com/events/2026/seo-webinar-signup`. The vanity URL can be a path on the main domain, a subdomain or a separate short domain.

For search engines the type of redirect matters. Google treats 301 and 308 as permanent redirects, and the destination is then the URL shown in results. With temporary redirects (302, 307) the source URL usually stays in the index. A permanent redirect fits a vanity URL that is meant to stay. A temporary one can suit a limited campaign.

## Vanity URLs and SEO

No ranking boost from the vanity URL itself is documented (assessment). Its value is for people, since it can be typed, read aloud and printed on a poster. Links and mentions that point to the destination URL directly collect on one address instead of being split (assessment).

Two points should be right:

- The redirect is server-side. Google says a server-side redirect has the highest chance of being interpreted correctly and recommends JavaScript redirects only if server-side or meta refresh redirects are not possible.
- No duplicate content. If the vanity URL serves the same content instead of redirecting, a canonical tag on the preferred URL tells Google which version to use.

## Example

```
https://example.com/webinar
→ 301 →
https://example.com/events/2026/seo-webinar-signup
```

## Common mistakes

- Several vanity URLs for the same page with no clear preferred address.
- Redirect chains from vanity URL to old URL to new URL.
- A campaign ends and the vanity URL returns a 404.
