# Web hosting and SEO

**Web hosting** is the infrastructure that serves a website. For SEO it matters through speed, availability and error rates, which affect how users and crawlers experience the site.

## How does hosting affect SEO?
Google does not list a hosting provider as a ranking factor. The effect arrives through measurable behavior. web.dev names insufficient memory, outdated backend stacks and shared hosting as causes of slow Time to First Byte, especially for personalized pages with database queries. A CDN and caching can reduce that.

Google's crawl budget guide ties crawling to server health. When a site slows down or returns 5xx errors or 429 responses, the crawl capacity limit drops and Google crawls less. Google's documentation on HTTP status codes adds that already indexed URLs eventually drop out of the index if server errors persist.

When hosting changes without changing URLs, Google provides a separate site move guide for that case.

## Example
A site on a small shared plan returns 503 during traffic peaks. Google reduces its crawl rate until responses recover.

## What to check
- Response time and TTFB for uncached pages
- Share of 5xx responses in server logs
- Capacity for traffic peaks and crawl load
