# Zero-click search

A **zero-click search** is a search that ends without a click on any result. The user may read the answer on the results page, enter a new query, or leave. The term applies to classic search results with answer features and to AI-generated answers.

## How common are zero-click searches?

The best-known figures come from SparkToro. For January to April 2026, SparkToro and Similarweb analyzed a desktop and mobile clickstream panel. In it, 68.0% of US Google searches, 62.1% of German searches and 69.5% of UK searches ended without a click. Per 1,000 Google searches, 231 clicks in the US and 287 in Germany reached the open web. SparkToro's earlier study, based on a Datos panel (September 2022 to May 2024), found 58.5% for the US and 59.7% for the EU in 2024. SparkToro notes that the panels differ, so the two studies are not directly comparable.

The 2024 study splits sessions further. About 37% ended without further action and about 22% continued with a new query. The panel has little iPhone and iPad data, and ad blockers may hide some paid clicks.

A survey by Bain and Dynata (December 2024, 1,117 respondents) found that about 80% of consumers rely on zero-click results in at least 40% of their searches.

## What it means for SEO

Results pages show answers directly through features such as featured snippets, knowledge panels and AI Overviews. Search Console defines CTR as clicks divided by impressions, so a page can collect many impressions and few clicks when the answer sits on the results page itself. CTR is therefore easier to read when it is compared per query type (assessment).

Google Analytics counts visits from links in AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Organic Search channel. A zero-click share says nothing about how much traffic comes from AI answers.

A search for the current time in Tokyo returns the time at the top of the results. Most users have what they need and leave without clicking.

**Is every zero-click search lost traffic?**
SparkToro counts searches that ended without a click and searches that continued with a new query. Whether a click would have happened without the answer feature is not measured.
