How is AEO defined?
HubSpot describes AEO as improving how often and how accurately a business appears in AI-generated answers, and says it is complementary to SEO, because both benefit from high-quality, well-structured content. Where SEO aims at rankings and clicks, AEO is measured by mentions and citations in answers.
According to reports, typical recommendations fall into three areas.
- Content: answer common questions directly under their own headings and put short core statements first
- Technical access: make sure AI crawlers can fetch and read the page
- Authority: keep brand names, products and terms consistent and visible across several sites
The relationship to GEO (generative engine optimization) is not settled. Some authors treat AEO as part of GEO, others use the two terms interchangeably.
Since 2026, some writers also use AEO for Agentic Engine Optimization. In that sense it means making a site usable for AI agents, for example so they can fill in forms or complete a purchase. Context tells which meaning is intended.

The table describes terms and does not rate methods. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google names no requirements beyond the basics of Search. The terms GEO, AEO and LLMO do not appear in Google's documentation on AI features. Goals without a primary source reflect industry usage. What does Google say?
Google’s documentation on AI features states: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” A page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Google also writes that no new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup are needed. The documentation does not describe a separate discipline next to SEO. How other providers pick sources is not fully disclosed.
Example
A retailer answers “How long do I have to return an item?” in one or two sentences directly under a heading on its returns page, with the deadline and conditions. An answer box or an AI system can use that section as a basis for its answer. Whether it does so can only be checked by observing the answers.
FAQ
Does AEO replace SEO? Per Google’s documentation, indexing and snippet eligibility remain the basis. AEO describes a focus within these foundations.
