An AI search crawler is a crawler that fetches web pages for the search feature of an AI product, so the product can surface and link them in answers. Operators say these bots are not used for model training. The name is shorthand and not an official category.

Which AI search crawlers exist?

OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Anthropic describes Claude-SearchBot as navigating the web to improve search result quality for users.

OpenAI notes that sites opting out of OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers and that a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to take effect.

A selection of ten AI bots from major operators, not a complete list. All values come from each operator's own documentation (as of 8 October 2026). The table does not show whether a bot actually complies with robots.txt; it only reflects what operators state. User agents can be spoofed; published IP lists or reverse DNS identify genuine requests. How does it differ from other AI bots?

Training crawlers collect content for models. User-triggered fetchers load one page because someone asked. According to their operators, search crawlers fetch pages so the service can cite and link them in search answers.

Example
