Google cache

HistoricalAlso known as: cached page, cache link

Google cache was a Google Search feature that showed the copy of a page Google had stored. Google has retired it, and search results no longer contain a cache link. This entry is marked historical.

What was Google cache, and what applies today?

Users could open the menu next to a search result and view the version of the page Google had last saved. SEOs used it to see the state Google had last seen, to check whether a change had been picked up, and to read pages that were temporarily down.

According to reports, Google removed the cache link in February 2024. Danny Sullivan, Google’s Search Liaison, said it had been meant for a time when pages often failed to load and that this had improved enough to retire it (reported by Yahoo Tech; secondary source). Google then added a link to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine in the “More about this page” menu, according to the same reporting. The cache: search operator has stopped working, as SE Ranking reported in October 2024.

Google’s robots meta tag documentation confirms the consequence: the noarchive rule “is no longer used by Google Search to control whether a cached link is shown in search results, as the cached link feature no longer exists.”

To see what Google last saw of your own page, use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console. Its indexed version shows the last crawl, and the live test shows the page as Google fetches it now, with rendered HTML and a screenshot.

Example

A meta tag that once suppressed the cache link:

HTML
<meta name="robots" content="noarchive">

Google Search ignores this value today.

Common mistakes

  • Following guides that still explain how to open or clear the Google cache.
  • Maintaining noarchive for Google. It has no effect there.
  • Confusing it with HTTP caching in browsers and CDNs, which is a separate mechanism controlled by headers such as Cache-Control.

FAQ

Can you still view Google cache? No. The cache link and the cache: operator are gone. The Wayback Machine offers older versions of many pages, and the URL Inspection tool shows Google’s last crawl of your own site.
