Google Caffeine

HistoricalAlso known as: Caffeine index

Google Caffeine is the name of a web indexing system that Google announced in June 2010. In SEO, the term refers to the Google index infrastructure, not to the drug. It is a historical term, and the details below describe the state of 2010.

What did Caffeine change?

The previous index consisted of several layers, some of which were refreshed faster than others. The main layer was renewed only every few weeks because the whole web had to be analyzed first.

With Caffeine, Google analyzes the web in small portions and updates its index continuously. New pages and changes can enter the index right away. Google described the result as 50 percent fresher results than the previous index, and it said Caffeine processed hundreds of thousands of pages in parallel per second.

What did it mean for SEO?

Caffeine was a change to indexing infrastructure, not to ranking. Sites benefited because new and changed content could be found sooner. Google’s announcement says nothing about today’s scale or whether the name is still in use.

Names such as Florida (2003), Pigeon (2014), Possum (2016), Fred (2017) and Medic (2018), as well as Payday Loan and EMD, come from the SEO industry. Their dates rest only on trade press reports and posts by Google employees on X; Google has not published a dated page about them. Last checked: .
