Google Search Central is Google’s official source of guidance for people who build and maintain websites for Google Search. It bundles the documentation, a blog, a community forum, a YouTube channel, a podcast and events. It is not the same as Search Console, the tool that reports data about a specific site.
What does Search Central offer?
- Documentation at developers.google.com/search/docs. It covers SEO fundamentals such as the SEO Starter Guide and how Google Search works, crawling and indexing topics such as sitemaps and robots.txt, search appearance such as structured data and snippets, and guides for ecommerce and international sites.
- Blog with announcements, for example on changes to spam policies or core updates.
- Community forum where site owners can ask questions in Google’s help forum.
- Podcast and videos such as the Search Off the Record podcast and a YouTube channel with Search Console training.
- Events under the name Search Central Live.
Google licenses the content of its documentation pages under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, and code samples under Apache 2.0.
Why does it matter for SEO?
Statements about how Google Search behaves can be checked at the source. Pages carry a date for the last update, which helps when older blog posts or tutorials disagree. Google renamed Webmaster Central to Search Central in November 2020. The Search Essentials, Google’s rules for site owners, are published here as well, announced on the blog in October 2022 as refreshed guidelines for site owners.
Example
A site owner reads about a ranking drop on a forum and wants to know what Google actually says about spam. The spam policies page in Search Central lists the categories and shows the date of the last update.
FAQ
Is Search Central the same as Search Console? No. Search Central is documentation and community. Search Console is a tool that reports data about a site.
