Helpful content

Historical

Helpful content is content that Google describes as created primarily to benefit people rather than to attract search traffic. As a separate “helpful content system”, the approach was retired in March 2024 and is part of Google’s core ranking systems (historical).

What applies today?

Google announced the helpful content update in August 2022, and its status dashboard lists later helpful content updates in December 2022 and September 2023. Its stated target was pages and sites created primarily to rank well in search engines instead of helping users, and Google described it as a sitewide signal. In March 2024, Google’s ranking systems guide says, the system “evolved and became part of our core ranking systems”. Alongside that core update, Google said it expected to reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in results by 40 percent. An update of April 26, 2024 reported 45 percent after the rollout finished on April 19.

The guidance page “Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content” remains in place. It lists self-assessment questions on content, expertise and page experience, and it points to E-E-A-T, with trust named as the most important aspect.

Example

One question from Google’s list reads: “Does the content provide original information, reporting, research, or analysis?” A text that only rephrases other pages answers it poorly.

FAQ

Is there still a helpful content system? Not as a separate system. Google describes it as part of its core ranking systems since March 2024.
