Instant Checkout was a ChatGPT feature that let users buy products without leaving the chat. OpenAI and Stripe introduced it on September 29, 2025, and it was built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). OpenAI scaled it back on March 24, 2026, so this entry describes the original feature and its current status.
A user asked ChatGPT for product recommendations. When the user decided to buy, a Stripe-powered payment interface appeared in the conversation. Stripe issued a Shared Payment Token, ChatGPT forwarded it to the merchant through an API, and the merchant processed the order. According to Stripe, merchants kept control over accepting orders, taxes and fulfillment.
The launch was limited to the United States. Etsy sellers were first, and Stripe announced Shopify merchants as coming next. Merchants needed to supply a product feed and implement the ACP specifications.
In a post on March 24, 2026, OpenAI said the initial version of Instant Checkout “did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide” and that merchants may now use their own checkout experiences. Checkout moved toward merchant apps inside ChatGPT and toward merchants’ own websites, while ChatGPT focuses on product discovery. ACP itself remains documented in OpenAI’s developer pages.
Example
A user asks ChatGPT to recommend hiking boots. In the original feature, the user would complete the purchase in the same chat window. Under the current approach, ChatGPT shows product options, and the purchase happens in a merchant’s app or on its website.
