Organic search refers to the results a search engine ranks on its own and that nobody pays to place. It stands in contrast to ads. The same term is used for visits that arrive through these results.

How do organic results differ from ads?

Google states that it does not accept payment to rank a site higher and that ranking is done programmatically. Ads are separate, and Google refers to its own page on ads for details. TechTarget summarizes the difference as unpaid listings versus paid placements.

Organic results come in several formats. Besides web pages, the Google Search results can include images, videos and news.

What does organic search look like?

The result page depends on the query. Google gives the example that a search for “bicycle repair shops” likely shows local results rather than images, while “modern bicycle” is more likely to show images. Location, language and device also change what appears.

How does analytics count it?

Google Analytics assigns visits via non-ad links in organic search results to the Organic Search channel. Links in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are included.

Example

Someone searches “ski goggles” and clicks a regular listing without an ad label. That visit is organic. A click on a labeled ad above it is paid.
