Programmatic SEO is the automated creation of many pages from structured data and a page template, for example one page per city, per product variant or per combination of both. Ahrefs describes it as creating keyword-targeted pages in an automatic or near automatic way. Google does not use the term. According to reports, it comes from the SEO community.

How does programmatic SEO work?

A data source such as a database of locations, prices or product attributes is joined to a template. The result is a large set of URLs, each aimed at a specific query pattern. Shopify names e-commerce, location-based services, data aggregators and review sites as typical use cases. The same sources list duplicate or thin pages and neglected databases as common pitfalls.

Where Google draws the line

Google’s spam policies define scaled content abuse as many pages generated for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings and not helping users. The listed examples include:

  • generating many pages with generative AI tools without adding value for users
  • scraping feeds or search results to generate many pages, including through automated transformations such as synonymizing or translating
  • stitching together content from different pages without adding value

The policy also describes doorway abuse, where many similar pages target specific queries and lead users to intermediate pages. Whether a programmatic set falls under these policies depends on whether each page serves users with its own data.

Example

As an illustration, a real estate platform generates one page per city with current prices, number of listings and districts from its own database. Every page carries data that differs per city. A page per city with identical text and only the place name swapped is closer to the kind of page set the policy examples target (assessment).
