A reconsideration request asks Google to review a manual action taken against your website and lift it. You submit it in Search Console after you have fixed the reported violations of Google’s spam policies. This entry covers the Google meaning, not appeals in law or benefits.

When can you file one?

Google finds violations through automated systems and through human review. A manual action shows up in the Manual Actions report in Search Console. Google states that when a site has a manual action, some or all of the site is not shown in Google search results. Only then is there something to review. A drop after a core update is algorithmic and cannot be appealed this way.

What does the process look like?

Google describes these steps:

  1. Open the violation description and find the affected pages.
  2. Fix the issue on all affected pages. These pages must be reachable, so they should not require a login, sit behind a paywall or be blocked by robots.txt.
  3. Submit the request in Search Console.

A strong request explains the exact quality issue, describes the steps taken to fix it and documents the outcome. Google says most reviews take several days or weeks, and link-related ones can take longer. You get emails when the review starts and when it ends. Google asks site owners not to resubmit before a decision on an open request.

Example

A site receives the message about unnatural links to your site. The owner has links removed, explains in the request how the links came about and which site owners were contacted, and attaches a list of the removals. If the request is accepted, Google lifts the action.

Checklist before you submit

  • The issue is fixed on all affected pages, not only on a few examples.
  • Google can reach the pages, with no login, paywall or robots.txt block.
  • The request explains the exact quality issue.
  • The request describes the steps taken to fix it.
  • The request documents the outcome, for example with a list of changes.
  • No other request is open. Google asks site owners not to resubmit before a decision.

FAQ

Does a request help after a ranking drop from a core update? No. It applies only to manual actions.

Is it the same as requesting indexing? No. An indexing request asks Google to crawl a single URL and does not review a penalty.
