Search engine submission

HistoricalAlso known as: submit website to Google

Search engine submission means registering a website with a search engine so that it appears in results. Google states that it usually needs no registration, because it finds sites automatically. Tools like Search Console can speed up or monitor the process.

How does a site get into Google?

Google writes that it automatically looks for sites to add to its index and that you usually only need to publish your site on the web. New pages are found through links from known pages, and it can take a few weeks for Google to notice a new site. The query site:example.com shows whether pages of a domain are already indexed.

What does Search Console add?

In Search Console you can submit a sitemap or request indexing for a single URL with the URL Inspection tool. Google notes that there is a quota for individual URLs and that requesting a recrawl several times for the same URL does not get it crawled faster. A request does not guarantee inclusion in search results, immediately or at all. Google puts crawling at anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

Google does not accept payment to rank pages higher. Services that sell submission to Google or to many search engines therefore offer no advantage that Google recognizes (assessment).

Example

A company launches a new site and links to it from its social profiles. It submits the XML sitemap in Search Console, checks with site: after some days and uses the URL Inspection tool for the pages that are still missing.
