Unique content is content that exists in this form on only one page and gives readers something of their own. The term comes from SEO practice. Google does not define it and mentions it only in passing, but its documentation covers the same idea with questions about originality and added value.

What counts as unique?

Two meanings get mixed up. Text can be unique in wording, meaning it is not copied from elsewhere. It can also be unique in substance, meaning the page offers something other pages do not.

Google’s guidance on helpful content asks whether a page provides original information, reporting, research or analysis. It also asks whether a page that draws on other sources adds substantial value beyond them. Its spam policies list generating many pages mainly to manipulate search rankings, no matter how they are created, as scaled content abuse. Copying content from other sites and changing it only slightly, for example with synonyms, falls under scraping.

Example (fictional)

A shop publishes the manufacturer’s description of a coffee machine unchanged, as many other shops do. A description with measurements, cleaning effort and the shop’s own test notes gives readers more than the copied text.

FAQ

Does a plagiarism checker prove content is unique? It shows whether text was copied. It says nothing about whether the page adds value (assessment).
