Web directory

HistoricalAlso known as: website directory

A web directory is an online catalog of websites organized into categories and subcategories. Each entry typically has a link, a title and a description. In SEO the term is known mainly as an early form of link building and is largely historical today.

How is a web directory different from a search engine?

According to Wikipedia, directories rely on human editors, while search engines use automated crawlers. Directories emphasize browsing by category, search engines match keywords. Submissions were free or paid, and some directories required reciprocal links or sold featured placement.

History

Wikipedia credits Tim Berners-Lee with the first web directory, the World Wide Web Virtual Library. According to reports, Yahoo Directory shut down in late 2014, and DMOZ, the volunteer-edited Open Directory, closed on March 14, 2017. Most major directories are gone.

Web directories and SEO

Entries in directories used to be seen as easy backlinks. Google lists “low-quality directory or bookmark site links” as a form of link spam when links are created primarily to manipulate rankings.

A listing in a well-kept regional or industry directory can still help customers find a business. As a ranking measure it has little value (assessment).

Example

A plumbing company lists its name, address and phone number in a regional trade directory. Customers can find it there. The company does not use the entry as a ranking tactic.
