Conversational search is a form of search in which users ask in natural language and can follow up, while the system keeps the earlier turns in mind. The term has no standardized definition.
How does it differ from classic search?
Classic search treats each query on its own. In conversational search, a follow-up builds on the previous exchange. A 2024 survey paper describes conversational search as an approach that handles complex queries, keeps context across several turns and integrates information from several sources. It lists query reformulation, search clarification, conversational retrieval and response generation as typical modules.
Google presents AI Mode, announced on March 5, 2025 as a Labs experiment, with follow-up questions and a technique it calls query fan-out: multiple related searches run at the same time across subtopics and data sources, and the results are combined. Enterprise search products such as OpenSearch use the term for a setup that stores conversation memory and combines retrieval with a language model (retrieval-augmented generation).
Voice search describes spoken input. Conversational search describes a multi-turn dialogue, regardless of how the words are entered.
What does it mean for SEO?
Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for snippets. Follow-up questions mean that one visit to an AI answer can trigger several searches. Content that answers adjacent questions may fit this pattern better (assessment).
Example
- “Which hiking boots suit the E5 Alpine crossing?”
- “And if I expect rain?”
- “Is that model available in size 13?”
In step 2 the system has to know that the boots are still the topic, and in step 3 which model is meant.
Common questions
Is conversational search the same as conversational AI? Conversational AI covers systems that can hold dialogues, such as chatbots. Conversational search applies that ability to finding information.
