A direct answer, also called an answer box, is in SEO a result element that answers a question directly on the results page or inside an AI answer. In classic Google Search it corresponds to the featured snippet. Google itself does not use the terms “answer box” or “direct answer”. The messenger feature of the same name is unrelated.
What does Google say?
For featured snippets, Google reverses the normal result format and shows the descriptive snippet first. Google’s systems decide automatically whether a page makes a good featured snippet, and a page cannot be marked for it. Google does not state an exact minimum length.
Site owners can only control whether text is shown. nosnippet blocks all snippets, and data-nosnippet excludes single passages. A low max-snippet value reduces the chance of a featured snippet, but Google does not guarantee that it stops.
For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says there are no additional requirements. A page needs to be indexed and eligible for snippets.

How can content be built for it?
A common approach is a question as a heading with a short, self-contained answer of a few sentences below it. SEO glossaries describe this as an answer-first format that makes the answer easy to extract. Whether it earns a snippet is not documented (assessment).
Example
<h2>What is a canonical tag?</h2>
<p>A canonical tag is a link element in the head of a page that
names the preferred URL when several similar pages exist.</p>
Common questions
Can I force a featured snippet? No. Google’s systems select them automatically.
