Domain popularity is, as defined by SISTRIX, the number of different domains that link to an analyzed domain at least once. Whether a domain sends one link or a million, it counts once.
Difference to link popularity
Link popularity counts all incoming links. A domain that places a link in a sidebar or footer on a thousand pages adds a thousand to link popularity and one to domain popularity. The metric therefore evens out distortions caused by sitewide links.
It is a metric from SEO tools such as SISTRIX. Google does not use the term, and a role as a ranking signal is not documented.
Example
| Referring domain | Links to your site |
|---|---|
| fachblog.example | 1,200 |
| presse.example | 3 |
| verband.example | 1 |
Link popularity: 1,204 links. Domain popularity: 3 domains.
How to read it
The number says nothing about source quality. Topical fit and trustworthiness of the linking domains belong in any profile review. Bought links raise the count, but Google treats unqualified paid links as link spam.
