A mid-tail keyword is a search term between broad short-tail and specific long-tail keywords. It usually has about two to four words and narrows a topic without describing a full need.

How is mid-tail defined?

The category is a convention of SEO practice. Google does not define it, and sources draw the line differently, with word counts ranging from two to four. A useful reading is by effect. Short-tail terms name a topic, long-tail terms name a precise need, and mid-tail terms name a product type or subtopic. Smart Insights, an older article, groups search terms into head, mid-tail and long tail in a similar way.

Mid-tail terms commonly show moderate volume and moderate competition (assessment). Because the boundaries are fuzzy, it is more practical to check each term’s actual search results than to sort it by word count.

Example

“coffee machine” is a short-tail keyword, “coffee machine with grinder” a mid-tail keyword and “coffee machine with grinder under 300 euros” a long-tail keyword. The table compares these types with other keyword types and search intents. The examples are invented.

No primary source defines the boundaries between short, mid and long tail, whether by word count or by search volume. The table therefore gives no thresholds; the characteristics of the three tail types are based on practical experience. Google said in 2019 that 15 percent of daily queries were ones it had never seen before. Mapping Broder's types to Know, Website and Do is an inference, not a Google statement. According to the rater guidelines, a query can have several intents, and the line between Know and Do is often blurry. Examples are chosen freely; “reddit login” and “gas stations” come from the guidelines.
