A niche keyword is a specific search term for a narrow topic or a small audience. It usually has low search volume and little competition.
How does it differ from a long-tail keyword?
Niche keywords are often long-tail keywords, meaning longer queries of several words, but the two terms do not mean the same. Long-tail describes the form of the query, niche describes the subject area. Some long-tail keywords have high volume without serving a niche.
The appeal is competition. Where fewer pages compete for a term, a good ranking can take less effort. People who search for something very specific often have a concrete goal, which, according to reports, can lead to higher conversion rates.
The drawback is volume. A single niche keyword brings few visits, so the approach pays off when many such terms are covered together, for example through topic clusters.
Example
“Bike rental Brooklyn Williamsburg” is narrower than “bike rental Brooklyn”, and “bike rental” would be a seed keyword. The query has little volume but a clear intent.
