What does Google say?

In its guide to ranking systems, Google writes that these systems help ensure original content is shown prominently in results, “ahead of those who merely cite it”. Google also mentions support for a special canonical markup that lets creators indicate which page is the primary one when content appears in several places. Google does not describe that markup further in this passage. Some agency summaries also attribute copyright-based demotions to these systems, which Google lists separately as removal-based demotion systems.

What does it mean for SEO?

Google names original reporting explicitly, so the systems are probably most relevant for news sites and publishers, which often pass content on to partners (assessment). Anyone who syndicates content can point to the original page with canonical information. Which markup Google means is not described further in its guide.

Example

A trade magazine publishes an investigation. Ten blogs summarize and cite it. The systems are meant to put the magazine’s investigation ahead of the summaries.
