Outreach in SEO means contacting site owners, bloggers or editors to present content and earn backlinks, mentions or guest posts. Outside SEO the word describes reaching out to people in general. This entry covers the link building meaning.

How does outreach work?

According to reports, a typical process starts with a list of fitting target sites, then a personal email per contact, and a reason that is useful to the recipient, such as new data, a tool or a replacement for a dead link. Variants have names like blogger outreach, media outreach, link building outreach or digital PR. Reports also mention follow-up emails after about a week.

If money or another return changes hands for the link, Google’s spam policies apply. Paid links need sponsored or nofollow, otherwise they count as link spam.

Example

A heating software vendor publishes an analysis of subsidy applications. It writes to three trade portals, names the page where the figures fit and offers the data for a chart.
