What was the Panda update?

Google presented the change in a blog post on February 24, 2011. According to the post, the update was designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites, such as sites that add little value for users or copy content from other websites, and to rank sites with original content higher. Google wrote that the change noticeably affected 11.8 percent of queries; it launched in the U.S. first. Google’s ranking-systems guide describes Panda as a system meant to surface high-quality and original content.

In the ranking-systems guide, Panda is listed among retired systems, documented for reference. Search Engine Journal dates the integration into the core algorithm to January 2016, while Google writes 2015.

Today, quality assessment runs through the core systems. Since March 2024 these include the helpful content system. There are no separate Panda updates and no Panda-specific actions for site owners.

Their dates rest only on trade press reports and posts by Google employees on X; Google has not published a dated page about them. Last checked: .
