Pillar page

Also known as: cornerstone page, pillar content

A pillar page is a comprehensive page on a broad topic that links to more detailed pages and is linked back from them. It forms the center of a topic cluster. The term comes from content marketing and Google does not use it.

How is a pillar page structured?

The page gives an overview of the whole topic and answers the basic questions. For sub-topics it has short sections that link to cluster pages, each covering one detail or one specific query. Every cluster page links back to the pillar page. A table of contents with anchor links helps on long pages. This structure describes common content marketing practice and is not a Google requirement.

Semrush describes pillar pages as the cornerstone of a topic cluster, with the aim of covering a topic in breadth and keeping internal links organized. Sources disagree on length, from around 2,000 to over 5,000 words, and none of them backs the figure with data. A page should be as long as the topic requires.

Site architecture and click depthTree of a website: the home page is at depth 0, categories A and B at depth 1, three subcategories at depth 2, three products at depth 3. Product 1 is reached via the home page, category A and subcategory A1, and its breadcrumb shows that path. Google finds pages mainly through links.
Each level sits one click further from the home page. Google finds pages mainly through links and recommends that every page you care about gets a link from at least one other page on the site. The breadcrumb shows the page’s position in the hierarchy. What does a pillar page do for SEO?

Google describes links as a way to connect users and search engines with other parts of a site and recommends descriptive anchor text. A pillar structure relies on exactly that kind of internal linking. No primary source shows a ranking advantage from the format itself. Its practical value is a clear structure, easier navigation, and less overlap between pages.

Pillar page vs. cornerstone content

Cornerstone content names the most important content of a site on a core topic, a pillar page names the central page of a topic cluster, and the same page is often both (assessment).

Pillar page vs. landing page

A landing page pursues a conversion goal, such as a signup. A pillar page informs on a topic and leads readers on to detail pages. Bynder lists a third comparison, with blog posts, which cover single questions in a narrower way.

Example

A pillar page “Digital marketing” links to five cluster pages on SEO, social media, email marketing, content marketing and paid ads. Each cluster page links back to the pillar.
