Query deserves freshness

Also known as: QDF

Query Deserves Freshness (QDF) refers to the freshness systems Google uses to show newer content for queries where people would expect it. Google speaks of several “query deserves freshness” systems, and the abbreviation QDF comes from SEO usage. It is not a single update.

How does it work?

Google’s ranking systems guide lists “freshness systems” as active and describes them as various “query deserves freshness” systems designed to show fresher content for queries where it would be expected. Google gives two examples. Someone searching for a movie that has just been released probably wants recent reviews rather than older articles from when production began. A search for “earthquake” may normally bring material about preparation, but after a recent earthquake, news articles and fresher content may appear.

On November 3, 2011, Google announced an improvement that, according to Google, affects roughly 35 percent of searches. Google does not publish how it decides that a query needs fresher results or which signals count. Claims about publication frequency or social signals as triggers are not backed by Google’s documentation.

A selection, not a complete list. Core and spam updates since November 2021 have their own timeline. Names such as Florida (2003), Pigeon (2014), Possum (2016), Fred (2017) and Medic (2018), as well as Payday Loan and EMD, come from the SEO industry. Their dates rest only on trade press reports and posts by Google employees on X; Google has not published a dated page about them. Last checked: .

What does it mean for SEO?

Content that is dated and updated can matter more for time-sensitive topics (assessment). Whether a given query is affected depends on the query, not on the website (assessment).
