Recrawl

Also known as: re-crawl, request a recrawl

A recrawl is a crawler fetching a URL it already knows again so that changes reach the index. Site owners can ask Google to do this, but Google does not guarantee when it happens.

How do you ask Google to recrawl a page?

Google’s documentation describes two ways:

  • URL Inspection tool in Search Console, for a few URLs. It requires owner or full user permission for the property.
  • Sitemap, for many URLs at once, for example after a relaunch or a site migration.

A request does not guarantee that a page is included in search results immediately or at all. Google gives a range of a few days to a few weeks. Individual URL requests are subject to a quota, and submitting the same URL repeatedly does not speed it up. Progress can be checked in the Page indexing report or with the URL Inspection tool.

Example

The title of a category page was changed. The site owner inspects the URL in Search Console and requests indexing. It can take several days until the new title shows in search results.

Common questions

How long does a recrawl take? Google states a few days to a few weeks.

Can you force a recrawl? No. Google treats a request as a prompt, not a command.
