robots.txt monitoring is the regular, automatic check of a website’s robots.txt for changes and errors. When something differs, a notification (alert) goes out.

Why monitor the robots.txt?

The file tells crawlers which areas they may fetch, so one wrong line can block whole directories. A common trigger is a release or system change in which a staging version with a blanket disallow lands on the live server (practice example, not from Google).

Google’s specification explains why mistakes surface late. It caches the file generally for up to 24 hours. If the file cannot be fetched because of a server error, Google stops crawling at first, then uses the last cached copy for up to 30 days, and after that treats the file as missing if the site is otherwise available. All 4xx errors except 429 are treated as if no robots.txt existed. Content beyond 500 KiB is ignored.

Types of monitoring compared
TypeWhat is checked?Usual frequencyWhat it catches
Uptime monitoringwhether a URL is reachable and returns the expected status code within a time limitshort intervals, often minutesOutages and server errors (5xx), including at night. On 5xx and 429, Google temporarily slows down crawling.

Change monitoringContent of a page or file compared with the previous fetchset by the userchanges without an error code, such as a new title, a changed canonical or a removed text section
SEO monitoringsearch-relevant signals of many URLs: status codes, redirects, noindex, canonicals, robots.txt, sitemaps, contentregular crawls, usually daily to weeklya noindex after a release that visitors never see. Google drops such pages once it reads the tag while crawling.
Rank trackingPosition of the site for set keywords, per country, language, location and devicedaily to weeklydrops for single keywords in a fixed setup. Search Console instead shows the average topmost position across all impressions.
robots.txt monitoring (this term)Content, availability and status code of robots.txtregular, interval of your choicea new blocking rule such as Disallow: /. Google generally caches robots.txt for up to 24 hours.
Sitemap monitoringAvailability, format and listed URLs of XML sitemapsregular, interval of your choicesuddenly missing URLs or whole sections. Google limits a sitemap to 50 MB (uncompressed) or 50,000 URLs.

There is no standard for these types of monitoring. Scope, frequency and examples are based on practical experience and vary by tool. Statements about Google's behaviour (crawling on 5xx and 429, noindex, robots.txt caching, sitemap limits, position in Search Console) are backed by sources. What is checked?

  • changes to the content, compared with the previous version
  • availability and status code
  • valid syntax and blocked key URLs
  • reference to the XML sitemap

Example

robots.txt
# before
User-agent: *
Disallow: /internal/

# after
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

Monitoring reports the changed line. Without it, the block may only show up when rankings drop. The example is invented.
